Keswick YHA related update…

The youth hostel association have changed their requirements for guests using their properties, in the past only the group leader needed to provide proof of identity, please read the new requirement below.
‘We work hard to create a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all of our guests. To assist with this, you and any member of your group over the age of 18 will be asked to provide valid ID on arrival at the hostel.’
Keswick have supplied their menu for our evening meal on Thursday, I need to return the completed form back no later than Tuesday evening, please make your choices from the menu attached and let me know as soon as possible. Here’s the menu… 4Thursday.
‘Breakfast is a Full English offering of bacon, sausage, scrambled egg, beans, grilled tomato, hash brown and toast (vegetarian sausage can also be prepared with advance notice) along with a continental buffet of cereals, yoghurts, fruit, juices, tea and coffee. This is served each morning between 0730 and 0900 but we would expect large groups to specifiy an approximate time at which they would like to eat. We needn’t take choices for breakfast time, but we do ask that you inform us of any allergies or conditions that your group members may have that may be relevant to this meal. We can provide alternative options like gluten-free bread and soya milk etc but this can be difficult without prior notice.
 Hostel facilities
On the ground floor of YHA Keswick you’ll find a large open-space dining room/lounge area, a fully licensed bar and café, and a self-catering kitchen. The kitchen is accessible to guests 24 hours a day and is fully-fitted for all culinary purposes. However as it contains potentially hazardous implements and equipment, it is unsuitable for unsupervised use by anybody under the age of 16. It is also fairly compact and not intended for large-scale group use so please inform the hostel if you are intending to prepare vast quantities of food in there so we can discuss your options.
YHA Keswick also provides free wi-fi on the ground floor of the hostel using The Cloud network.
The first, second and third floors are exclusively accommodation areas with the exception of our drying room on the second floor which contains limited laundry facilities. A number of our first floor rooms contain private balconies, which we will render inaccessible when the room is in use by guests under the age of 18.
Do note that, as our bar is licensed, guests are not permitted to bring alcohol purchased from elsewhere onto the premises.
The hostel is staffed each day from 7am through to 11pm. The hostel entrance is locked outside of these hours but can be accessed by any guest in possession of a valid key-card (these will be issued to you on arrival). You’ll also be given an emergency out-of-hours contact number which you can use to call a member of staff should you have any issues during the night.’

  1. What a lovely couple of days 5th and 6th October. Photos are cracking and weather not too shabby either. Good company and excellent scenery what more could be asked. Five star!!!

  2. Cycle-treks 2017

2017 was an amazing year for Cycle-treks tours. Six tours in all not to mention the special coast and castles for the American guests.
Can’t imagine the amount of time spent planning these tours. As usual the detail in planning the routes was fantastic. Every last detail from bykes, timing, excellent accommodation, superb meals and even alternative plans in case of emergency.
Things that stand out in memory:

The rain and mud on Keilder tour. No stars to look at. Great communal accommodation at Tarset bunk house. Loved Gary’s suntanned (muddy) legs.

Start of Reivers tour very wet. Racing to get gates open. Brilliant landscapes and challenging hills

Walney to Wear tour. Biggest hill ever climbed on 2nd day of tour. 3rd day more hills but great views. Kirkby Steven Y.H.A. Food. Off road route down from Tan Hill exhilarating and ManorHouse (fabulous accommodation.

5 ferries tour 1. Racing to catch ferries. Ferry journeys. Rain, midgies and gorgeous George. Rain on free day, crystal glasses in fabulous Youth hostel. Delayed ferry and plan B to enable us to catch trains home. Bus driver! Kindness of woman who gave us lifts to enable us to catch our train.

Northern Lakes tour. Fabulous weather. Fabulous scenery. Fabulous YHA accommodation.

Our leader’s cooking – lamb tagine, tomato soup, macaroni and cheese to mention a few.

All these tours would not have been possible without all the friendly caring participants pulling together and our leader who ensures our safety and well being.

A big thank you to Neil from the Gateshead girls.
